Open Book Audio Store Going Offline 9/3/2010 for a Major New Release

Tonight at about 11PM EDT / 8PM PDT, we are going to be pulling down the existing Open Book Audio store for a major overhaul.  The store will come back online no later than 5PM on Monday, September 6, 2010. 

During this time we will be making several major changes to the store.  The OBA store will be migrating from its existing, standalone platform to an all-new e-commerce platform that will be very tightly integrated with the main OBA Site.  This will provide several major benefits, including:

  • Integration with the Open Book Audio content management system
  • Easier to add and maintain products
  • More consistent user experience
  • A single user login
  • Consistent look and feel across all OBA pages
  • Integrated samples which link to product pages, increasing click-through traffic
  • Improved site & credit card security
  • New web host, providing increased bandwidth and speed
  • Easier navigability
  • And most importantly, new products!

We'll post here in the blog when we're back online.  Thanks for your patience during this outage.  We are very excited for you to see the new store when it relaunches.

Welcome back to Andrew, and congrats to he and his wife on the birth of their second son!

Recently, the Library of Congress released an edict governing the exceptions related to the Digital Millenium Copyright Act or DMCA. (By the way, for an interesting read about DRM, go read the full act at the Library of Congress website.)  Now, this gets a touch complicated. The new edict essentially relaxes the rules for what constitutes legal digital-lock cracking. In other words, when is it ok to get around the DRM rules of a corporation so long as it benefits the end user in a specific way and does not lead to excessive distribution of copyrighted material. Complicated, right? To give you an example, the Library of Congress stated that jailbroken iPhones are essentially legal and that it's ok to upload short clips from DVDs for non-commercial use. Confused yet?

We know we're running behind on our discussion of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larssen.  We'll discuss it on the next podcast.

The OBA Store is Back Online

Just a quick note to let your website visitors know that the OBA Store is back online.  And, with our speedy new web server, we should be able to deliver the downloaded audiobooks to you much more quickly. 

Also, for visibility's sake, we're in the middle of a major redesign of the store and it's functionality, integrating it more fully into the main Open Book Audio site.  Be on the lookout for that coming soon, and another fun giveaway or two to go with it.

Hosting Transition
